Types of Foot Bones Commonly Affected by Stress Fractures
Your feet are made up of 26 bones. While any of these bones can be fractured, there are three foot bones in which stress fractures are particularly common. The metatarsal bones account for between 17% and 35% of all foot stress fractures. These bones are located near the front part of your foot and connect the toes to the midfoot. Metatarsal fractures are especially common among runners and dancers. The calcaneus or heel bone is the site of 21% to 28% of stress fractures. The navicular bone, which is located on the top of the foot, is also a common site of stress fractures. Stress fractures can worsen without treatment, causing pain, tenderness, swelling, bruising, and weakness that interferes with daily activities. If you suspect that you have broken a bone in your foot, please seek the care of a podiatrist.
Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep your pain free and on your feet.
Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle
Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use. The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.
What Are Stress Fractures?
Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:
- Runners
- People affected with Osteoporosis
- Tennis or basketball players
- Gymnasts
- High impact workouts
Symptoms
Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.

What Is Turf Toe?
Turf toe occurs when the joint at the base of the big toe gets sprained as a result of a vigorous upward bend of the affected toe. It commonly occurs while playing sports such as football. When players are on artificial turf, the foot grips the ground, but the body goes forward and causes the toe to bend beyond its normal range. Signs you may have turf toe can include pain and swelling at the base of the big toe, pain and tenderness when stretching the ligament, and tenderness in the ball of the foot when pressing on it. Depending on the severity of the injury, recovery from turf toe can take approximately 3-4 weeks. Athletes who believe that they have turf toe should consult with a podiatrist for proper treatment.
Sports related foot and ankle injuries require proper treatment before players can go back to their regular routines. For more information, contact Genine Befumo, DPM of University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries
Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Plantar Fasciosis
- Achilles Tendinitis
- Achilles Tendon Rupture
- Ankle Sprains
Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Are There Benefits to Stretching the Calf Muscles?
Many runners know the benefits of stretching the calves. This can have a positive impact on the Achilles tendon, and may gradually lengthen the calf muscles. This can improve walking style, or gait, which is needed to maintain standing alignment. Research has indicated that stretching the calves may improve specific foot conditions that can include plantar fasciitis and bunions. An effective stretch for the calves can be done by standing on a step, and lowering one heel at a time, until a gentle stretch is felt. Additionally, when leaning into the palms that are against a wall, and keeping one leg bent and the other leg straight behind, this is known as a calf stretch that many runners practice. If you would like to know the benefits of stretching the calves, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.
Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.
Stretching the Feet
Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.
- Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
- Similar to the previous one, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
- Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
- Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.
It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising and ice and rest the foot. It is advised to then see a podiatrist for help.

How Long Does an Ankle Sprain Take To Heal?
Ankle sprains occur when one or more ligaments in the ankle overstretch or tear. This usually occurs due to a sudden twisting of the ankle, or from falls or direct impacts. How long it takes to recover from an ankle sprain depends on the severity of the sprain. A Grade 1 sprain is considered mild and is characterized by minimal pain and swelling. It typically takes a few days for the injury to heal. However, while a Grade 1 sprain is healing, the ankle is in a weakened, unstable state and can be prone to re-injury. A Grade 2 sprain is moderate and is characterized by swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking. This type of sprain takes several days to weeks to heal. A Grade 3 sprain, the most severe type, is characterized by swelling, bruising, ankle instability, and an inability to bear weight on the ankle. Recovering from a Grade 3 sprain takes between 6 and 8 weeks. If you have sprained your ankle, please seek the care of a podiatrist.
Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?
Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.
What Are the Symptoms?
- Mild to moderate bruising
- Limited mobility
- Swelling
- Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)
Preventing a Sprain
- Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
- Stretching before exercises and sports
- Knowing your limits
Treatment of a Sprain
Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity. Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.
If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Gout and Diet
Small urate crystals that can lodge in the joints of the big toe, causing severe pain, can be indicative of gout. Gout is a form of arthritis, and is caused by excess uric acid in the bloodstream. It may develop as a result of genetic factors, or from eating foods that have large amounts of purines. These types of foods can include shellfish, red meat, alcohol, and drinks that are made with sugar. Some of the symptoms that are associated with this ailment consist of pain and swelling in the big toe and surrounding area, and the condition may worsen at night. Patients who have high blood pressure, kidney disease, or who may be obese are more likely to develop gout. Relief may be felt after making positive lifestyle changes, such as dietary modifications that may consist of eating more fruits, vegetables, and drinking plenty of fresh water. If you are afflicted with gout, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can effectively treat this condition.
Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.
What Is Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.
People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.
Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Preventing Blisters Is the Best Way to Cure Them
When skin becomes damaged due to friction or other causes, a pocket of fluid (blister) may form which acts as a protective layer, or cushion. Clear serum is the fluid inside of a blister which helps the skin heal and protects it from becoming infected. If the blister is filled with yellow or green pus, this can mean that an infection has set in. Proper treatment is necessary in order to get rid of the infection and to avoid potential serious complications. To help prevent blisters from forming on your feet, make sure your shoes fit well and are comfortable—with no areas that cause friction or put pressure on your feet or toes. Keep your feet dry by purchasing moisture-wicking socks. If you have an infected blister or frequently experience blisters on your feet, it is suggested that you seek the professional care of a podiatrist.
Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Genine Befumo, DPM of University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Foot Blisters
Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.
What Are Foot Blisters?
A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.
Symptoms
(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)
- Bubble of skin filled with fluid
- Redness
- Moderate to severe pain
- Itching
Prevention & Treatment
In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

What Podiatrists Can Do
Podiatrists are doctors that specialize in treating conditions that affect the feet of children, adults, and seniors. They can treat infections, provide pain relief, correct deformities, and help to heal broken bones. Podiatrists help treat specific conditions such as diabetes, ingrown toenails, flat feet, bunions, heel pain, blisters, athlete’s foot, cracked heels and so much more. Podiatrists are also able to prescribe orthotics, which are typically custom made shoe inserts, in order to relieve pressure from problem areas on the feet. Podiatrists can help you pick proper footwear to prevent a variety of foot and ankle conditions from developing. They can also help you choose the correct walking or running shoe too. If you have a foot problem that you are unsure about or are experiencing any type of foot pain, a podiatrist is trained to help find a diagnosis and provide proper treatment for your specific condition.
If you are experiencing pain in the feet or ankles, don’t join the stubborn majority refusing treatment. Feel free to contact Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
What Is a Podiatrist?
Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.
Podiatric Treatment
A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:
- Physical therapy
- Drugs
- Orthotic inserts or soles
- Surgery on lower extremity fractures
A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.

My Child's Foot Is Asleep
Foot numbness in children is frequently caused by a compression of the nerves in the foot following a period of sitting with the legs or feet tucked underneath the body. The term for this is the foot “falling asleep.” Though your child may feel a pins and needles sensation, heaviness, or pain in their feet upon standing, this is nothing to worry about and tends to go away within minutes as the foot “wakes up.” Nevertheless, there are other possible causes of foot numbness, such as injuries to the feet or ankles, that you should watch out for. If your child complains of frequent foot pain or numbness that interferes with their daily activities or gets worse over time, it is suggested that you take your child to see a podiatrist.
The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Genine Befumo, DPM of University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy
- Make sure their shoes fit properly
- Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
- Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
- Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
- Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
- Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
- Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
- Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.
