Symptoms of Neuropathy

Many diabetic patients have been prone to experience a foot condition known as neuropathy. This condition may develop when the peripheral nerves become damaged. When these nerves become compressed, it’s likely that those affected will experience a certain degree of pain and discomfort. Common symptoms of neuropathy can include a numbing or tingling sensation, muscle cramping, difficulty with balance, or loss of feeling in the affected area. To help treat this condition, some patients have found relief with physical therapy and the use of assistive walking devices. For more information on neuropathy and how to treat this condition, it’s recommended that you speak with a podiatrist.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

There are many patients that enjoy the benefits of getting regular foot massages. Research has indicated that it has become a popular form of foot therapy, and that it may benefit the overall body. This type of massage is performed by applying warm lotion on the entire foot, and rubbing the top of the foot with firm motions. The toes can be massaged by pulling them away from the body, while also supporting the arch of the foot. Additionally, another method of massaging the toes can be performed by sliding your fingers between each toe, while moving your fingers toward the bottom of the toes. If you would like additional information about how to perform foot massages, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

Foot therapy is often necessary for those recovering from either foot deformities or foot injuries. If you have concerns regarding therapy, Genine Befumo, DPM of University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Most Common Injuries

People who are active or athletes are prone to a variety of injuries. Therefore, it is often important to take part in physical therapy in order to quickly get back on the right track.

What to Do When Injured

Physical Therapy – This specialized treatment will focus on the affected area, speeding up recovery and the overall healing process. It is a proven method that has helped millions of people return from any injury.

During physical therapy you will undergo regimented training to get back into full form. Training is often very difficult, especially at first when the foot feels weak. Physical therapy often involves:

Basic stretching and twisting exercises – getting the feet’s mobility and flexibility up.

Massaging – the therapist will massage the injured area in order to activate the muscles and relax them.

Strengthening Exercises – this allows the muscles in the affected area to regain their full strength, a vital step towards full recovery.

Are Flat Feet Painful?

Factors that indicate you may have flat feet are often noticeable while standing on the floor. The arch of the foot will appear absent, or extremely low. The arch typically provides a spring to the step, and is helpful in distributing the weight of the body across the legs and feet. Flat feet may develop from birth, genetic factors, or from a possible foot or ankle injury. Common symptoms that can be associated with this condition may include foot pain, and the arch area may become swollen, as well as the calves. If you have flat feet, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can recommend specific stretching techniques. These may be helpful in alleviating some of the pain and discomfort that can come with this condition.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

The Heel and Plantar Fasciitis

Patients who have a foot condition that is known as plantar fasciitis often experience pain and discomfort in the heel and arch areas of the foot. The pain may increase in the morning after arising, and it may be evident in patients who stand for the majority of the day. The plantar fascia is located on the sole of the foot, and connects the heel to the toes. It can become inflamed as a result of an injury, or may become damaged from frequently standing on hard surfaces. Additionally, it can occur from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, and moderate relief may be found if orthotics are consistently worn. If you have heel pain which causes difficulty in walking, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can recommend effective treatment techniques.

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is often caused by a strain injury. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Monroe Township, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Excess Uric Acid May Cause Gout

Excess uric acid in the bloodstream may produce a condition that is known as gout. It can cause pain and discomfort, and in severe cases, permanent joint damage may occur. Patients who have family members afflicted with gout may have an increased risk of developing this condition, in addition to those who practice unhealthy lifestyle habits. The common symptoms that are associated with this ailment can include pain in the joints of the big toe, swelling, redness, and it may be difficult to walk. Moderate relief may be found when the affected foot is elevated, and healthy eating habits are enforced. Research has indicated it may be beneficial to drink plenty of water daily, and the gout attacks may become less frequent when a gentle exercise routine is frequently practiced. If you have developed gout, it is advised that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can properly treat this condition.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Genine Befumo, DPM from University Foot and Ankle Center, L.L.C. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
