A Vermont man recently set the record for longest barefoot run. Teage O’Connor ran 62 miles in just a little over 7 hours. This broke the previous world record. O’Connor ran the record on the University of Vermont’s track when he couldn’t find a 100K to run in. He had been hoping to break a record before his wife gives birth. Before you go out and try a long-distance barefoot run, take heed; O’Connor is experienced in running. He was the top Vermont Men’s finisher in the Vermont City Marathon in 2017. So, what can runners do to make barefoot running safe? It’s best to make a slow transition from running shoes to barefoot running. Once the feet begin to adjust, try walking, then jogging and gradually increasing the distance. Minimalist running shoes may also be an option.
